Designated Person for Excavation Works

The Designated Person for Excavation Works course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to plan, supervise, and monitor excavation activities safely and in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations. This course emphasizes the critical role of the designated person in identifying hazards, implementing control measures, and ensuring safe excavation practices.

Participants will learn about soil types, trenching techniques, shoring and shielding systems, utility detection, hazard assessment, and emergency procedures. The course also covers permit-to-work systems, risk assessment, and responsibilities for ensuring that excavation work is carried out safely, minimizing the risk of cave-ins, collapses, and other excavation-related incidents.

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to equip participants with the competency to oversee excavation activities and maintain a safe working environment. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal responsibilities of a Designated Person under applicable OSH regulations.

  • Identify hazards associated with excavation work, including soil instability, underground utilities, and falling objects.

  • Conduct risk assessments and implement appropriate control measures.

  • Supervise the use of shoring, shielding, and trench protection systems.

  • Ensure compliance with permit-to-work and site safety procedures.

  • Monitor excavation activities and enforce safe work practices.

  • Respond to emergencies, including trench collapses and rescue operations.

  • Promote a safety culture and effective communication among excavation teams.
